5 Beautiful Beaches in the Galapagos Islands

Last Updated on July 1, 2021

Did you know over 225,000 visitors flock to the Galapagos Islands each year?

Many come to see the unique Galapagos wildlife–many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. Others come to learn more about Charles Darwin and his studies on the islands.

Science and history are great and everything, but what if you just want to lay on the beach? Is there anywhere in the Galapagos where you can just kick back and relax?

The answer is yes! In this post, we’ll reveal 5 beautiful Galapagos Islands beaches to include on your travel itinerary.

Read on to learn more.

1. Tortuga Bay (Santa Cruz Island)

You have your travel guide and tips for mainland Ecuador, but what about the Galapagos?

Your first stop should be Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz Island. Arguably one of the prettiest beaches on earth, here you’ll find a postcard-perfect vision of tropical paradise.

Picture white sand beaches and pristine turquoise water with a scattering of bright green mangroves. You’re likely to see a few marine iguanas or seals lounging nearby.

2. Bartolome Island Beach

If you’ve seen any photos of the Galapagos, you’ve probably seen the iconic image of Pinnacle Rock.

Situated on the volcanic coastline of Bartolome Island, this massive rock protrudes out of the water like a crashed spaceship. The crescent-shaped beach beneath features white and pink sand and is ideal for snorkeling.

If you’re lucky, you might even see a few penguins wander past while you’re enjoying the views.

3. Puerto Villamil (Isabela Island)

If you like long walks on the beach, head to Isabela Island and the idyllic setting of Puerto Villamil.

At over 2 miles in length, it’s one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of beach in the Galapagos. It’s almost always dotted with flamingos wading through the shallow, tranquil waters.

If you need a break from the relentless sunshine, a canopy of coconut palms will provide the shade you need.

4. Red Sand Beach (Rabida Island)

Want to see a bizarrely beautiful and unique beach? You’ve heard of white sand, pink sand, and black sand–but what about red sand?

Rabida Island has a stunning (and appropriately named) red sand beach you have to see to believe. Pelicans, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies will keep you company as you take an endless amount of photos.

The volcanic sand in this area has an unusually high amount of iron, giving it the dazzling red color.

5. Gardner Bay Beach (Espanola Island)

If you want to have your beach and your wildlife too, hightail it for Gardner Bay Beach.

Here you’ll find a steady stream of sea lions coming and going from the shallow waters. The reefs are perfect for snorkeling, where you’ll find plenty of tropical fish and maybe even a white-tipped shark.

And stick around until the sun goes down–this beach offers the best sunsets in the Galapagos Islands.
