Prominent Figure Skating Romances and Marriages

Figure skating seems to be a great place for romance. Several skaters have met at the rink and have had romances. This is a list of just some skating related romances and marriages.
David Pelletier and Jamie Salé
2002 Olympic Pair Skating Champions David Pelletier and Jamie Salé were married on December 30, 2005. They began skating together in 1998 and started dating in 1999. Pelletier proposed to Salé on Christmas Day 2004. The couple performs professionally in Stars on Ice and lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Jack Courtney and Sheryl Trueman Courtney
Jack Courtney and Sheryl Trueman Courtney’s story may be perhaps the most romantic skating story in history since they have known each other for their entire lives. They were roller skating champions before they were ice skaters and they were the first American roller pair team to win the World Roller Skating title. Jack won worlds in both singles and pairs in 1968. He also won the U.S. Senior men’s title in singles in roller skating five times and the national senior pair title was won by Jack and Sheryl four times. They went their separate ways in the late 1960s, but in 2003, they reunited and married.
Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov
Russian pair skaters Gordeeva and Grinkov won virtually every competition they entered. They won the Olympics in both 1988 and 1994. They began skating together as children and married when they were quite young. Sergei Grinkov died suddenly. He had a heart attack. He died on November 20, 1995, in Lake Placid, New York while rehearsing for a “Stars on Ice” tour. He was only twenty-eight years old at the time of his death.
Rena Inoue and John Baldwin
Rena Inoue and John Baldwin are the first and only figure skating pair team to land a throw triple axel. In December of 1999, Inoue met John Baldwin. John was coming to the end of his singles skating career and considered pair skating. His father set up a try-out with Rena. They are a couple both on and off the ice. After their performance at the 2008 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, Baldwin went down on his knees and proposed to his pair skating partner.
Carol Heiss Jenkins and Hayes Alan Jenkins
Carol Heiss won the 1960 Olympics in women’s figure skating, and she also won the silver medal at the 1956 Olympics. She married 1956 Men’s Olympic Figure Skating Champion, Hayes Alan Jenkins. Additionally, Hayes Jenkins was the world figure skating champion in men’s singles from 1953 through 1956.
Jill Trenary Dean and Christopher Dean
Jill Trenary won the U.S. Ladies title in figure skating in 1987, 1989, and 1990. She won the World Figure Skating Championship in 1990. Christopher Dean won the Olympics in ice dancing in 1984 with partner Jayne Torvill. Trenary and Dean were married in 1994 and live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The couple has two sons.
Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon won the Canadian national ice dancing title in 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. They are known for dramatic and elegant lifts. They were married in August of 2008. Their love for each other shows in their skating.
Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov
American ice dancers Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov met through the internet. Melissa was searching for an ice dance partner. When the couple first met, they spoke different languages. The two fell in love quite quickly and were married on February 2, 2001, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gregory and Petukhov competed together in the 2006 Olympics.
Dianne DeLeeuw Chapman and Doug Chapman
Dianne DeLeeuw won the ladies title at the 1975 World Figure Skating Championships and went on to win a silver medal at the 1976 Olympic Games. She married the man who made her a champion, coach Doug Chapman. The couple lives in Newport Beach, California.
Janet Champion Schlom and Dr. Louis Schlom
Janet Champion, child skating star and skating coach, was married to Dr. Louis Schlom for over thirty years. Janet met Lou at the “House of Ice,” the rink in San Diego where Janet taught skating. He was an excellent adult ice dancer. Janet skated every day on the noon public session just for fun; during those sessions, they started ice dancing together. He liked all the same things she enjoyed: skating, ballet, cooking, and photography. They became close and traveled to Los Angeles every weekend to take ice dance lessons. Their two daughters became figure skaters.
